How safe is the bridge near your home? Or the bridge that you travel on each day to go to work? Well, unfortunately, it might not be as safe as you think. There are some frightening numbers that were announced regarding the safety of the bridges in Michigan. According to numbers released by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, there are approximately 1,295 "structurally deficient" bridges in Michigan. Another 1,754 Michigan bridges are considered "functionally obsolete" because they do not meet modern design standards.

One of the "structurally deficient" bridges is located in south Lansing. According to a report by Mlive.com, the I-96 bridge as it crosses over Cedar Street is on the "structurally deficient" list. That bridge carries an average of 20,997 vehicles a day, including nearly 4,000 trucks.
