I'm hoping this post will do two things - be of some interest and help somebody out who might be taking heat for what their family says is a "road to nowhere" degree in writing or acting.

(Psst - I actually don't think you need a degree to be an actor or writer - but your parents wanted you to get a college degree, so....here we are)

Pay attention - I'm a parent and a guy who heard "Radio? Better minor in business just in case you can't get a radio job" - until I quit college to get a radio job. (My parents were supportive of the idea, but they got REAL supportive after I got a job in radio) If the subject of your future comes up over the holidays, just say, "Well, I'm in the right place - you know that new Mary Poppins movie? Written by a guy who majored in theater at State!"

True - the guy who wrote the screenplay for the "Mary Poppins Returns" movie is MSU alum David Magee, who also wrote the screenplay for "Life of Pi".

There's a great show on PBS called "On Story", where David was interviewed a couple of year ago. Show this to your mom:
