I'll be honest, I had no idea what a 'snow sergeant' was until I saw a report about them this week on WLNS-TV. If you don't know, a 'snow sergeant' is a person who volunteers their time to assist senior citizens or members of the disabled community with the free removal of snow and ice from their driveways and/or sidewalks.

According to the Snow Sergeant brochure, program participants are paired for the season with program recipients who will receive the free service. The program was originally started to help high school students who need service hours but now there are adults who participate in the program, too. So far this winter, about 117 people have signed up to receive help from the 'snow sergeants' and there are even more on the waiting list. With the amount of snow in the area and the city's 24-hour time limit for sidewalks to be cleared, demand for volunteers is especially high this winter.
