College textbooks are VERY expensive. Some colleges understand this and are trying to do something about it, like Lansing Community College. According to the Lansing State Journal, a lot of LCC students will now start using 'open educational resources'. These resources will be available for FREE online and will be openly licensed. According to the article, it's not just happening for one or two courses. Sixty-one professors will teach 24 courses representing 127 sections using open educational resources this fall.
