When you buy things online, you're SUPPOSED to pay the 6% Michigan sales tax - if it applies - on that item. I'm sure you do - I know I certainly do. But SOME people have been "scofflaws" and have been shirking their duties as law-abiding citizens here in Michigan.

I know - I can't believe it myself.

Well, that all changes as of Thursday, October 1st. According to MLive.com, in January, Governor Snyder signed a bill requiring out of state online companies, with a warehouse or distribution center in Michigan, to collect sales tax. It goes into effect on Thursday. And frankly, it makes sense. Why buy from a local store and pay 6% more, when you can go online and "conveniently forget" to pay the sales tax on an item? So, this will help local merchants.

I'm already anticipating your next question: Does Amazon have a distribution center in Michigan? (Amazon calls them "fulfillment centers")

Why, yes. Yes, they do. It's in Brownstown, MI - south of Detroit.

So now - you'll be REQUIRED to pay up. Starting Thursday. Here's the story.
