Today is National Drive-In Movie Day. It's also the 85th anniversary of the opening of the first drive-in, in Camden, NJ. At their peak, there were over 4000 drive-in theaters in America, with over a hundred drive-ins in the state of Michigan. Today, there are only about a tenth of that number still open, with nine left in Michigan. BUT - according to driveinmovie.com, there are plans to open about 10 new drive-ins, nationwide, this year or next. That means this will be the first time in 40 years that we may see a net increase in the number of drive-ins nationwide. This is good news, people.

Back in the late 70s, when I was a teen-age DJ in Rolla, Missouri, the local theater owners let me have my 19th birthday party at the Rolla Drive-In. I got to pick the movies for the night and they lowered the price that night. I believe we all got to watch "Car Wash", plus a Marx Brothers movie that night. The Rolla Drive-In is now a Nissan car dealership.

Probably the closest drive-in, for WITL listeners tonight, would be the Capri Drive-In, located in Coldwater, MI. Here's their website and schedule. "Deadpool 2" - at a drive-in? Does it get any better than that? It may not.

Have fun.
