Banana Don’s Slice of Americana – 26 Years Later
Congratulations to the Michigan State Spartans football team! Big Ten champions and headed to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It’s been 26 years since the Spartans visited Pasadena. A lot has changed.
January 1, 1988 – The number one TOP 40 song in America was “Faith” by George Michael.
January 1, 1988 – The number one COUNTRY song was “Somewhere Tonight” by the group Highway 101, whose drummer was Cactus Moser, and who is now Wynonna Judds’ husband.
January 1, 1988 – The number one MOVIE in America was “Three Men and A Baby” starring Ted Danson and Tom Selleck, and directed by Spock himself – Leonard Nimoy. (Two weeks later, “Good Morning, Vietnam” would take over as number one)
And, January 1988 – Former Michigan State football and baseball player, Detroit Tiger and bowhunter Kirk Gibson signs with the L.A. Dodgers. Later that year, in October 1988, in Game 1 of the World Series against the Oakland A’s, Kirk Gibson pinch hits with two outs in the 9th inning for the Dodgers and hits one of the most memorable home runs in the history of baseball.
I could watch this all day long and never get tired of it.
Go Green. Go White.
