Amery, Wisconsin is about 50-60 miles east of Minneapolis,MN. A couple of weeks ago, Randy Haines, a bowhunter from Amery shot a buck just west of Amery. It turned out that the deer he shot was a MULE DEER. In Wisconsin. That's pretty far east for one of those things. The closest real population of mule deer is South Dakota. At the time, it was thought that this was the first mule deer taken in Wisconsin, but the Wisconsin DNR says a hunter took one with a gun back in 1988.

The good news is, it's not illegal to shoot a mule deer in Wisconsin, just unusual, so the DNR tested the buck for CWD and Randy will get to keep him - and tell the story for years and years.
